 Saving Sailing Minimize

Participation in sailing is declining in America, down 70% since 1979. And Saving Sailing is a hot topic: when the book by the same title burst onto the scene in October, it quickly topped Amazon's Hot New Releases list in sailing, and garnered 5-star reviews by many in the sailing media. Saving Sailing is a provocative argument and action plan – sure to appeal to sailors everywhere – for the revival of family sailing . . . and quality uses of free time for rewarding intergenerational pastimes, lifelong hobbies, and free-time pursuits. Sailors appreciate it for its familiar stories and the opportunity to reflect on sailing in the bigger picture. Sailing clubs and program directors appreciate its advocacy of the core role of organizations and teachers in building a lifelong passion for sailing.

In his presentation, Saving Sailing author Nicholas Hayes will share his experiences while researching and writing the book, he will share the facts, dispel some myths about sailing, read an excerpt, and offer suggestions for sailing clubs to secure their futures. Hayes' talks are lively, fun and in demand: Just in the last year, he has presented in Newport, Paris, Chicago, and Annapolis to organizations like Sail America, US Sailing and the ISAF, and at sailing clubs all over the U.S.

About the Author
Hayes contributes significant time to community work and to sailing. He chaired the Program Committee of the YMCA Camping Services Group and served on its Board for three years.  He was a Director of the Milwaukee Yacht Club for four years, helping to renew its youth training facilities, and was its fleet captain. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, leading its Program Committee, helping to set long term program strategy. He has developed and teaches advanced classes on crew development and sail-trim for the Center. He is also a member of the Junior Sailing Committee at his home club, the South Shore Yacht Club.

Hayes is an avid sailor with nearly thirty years racing and cruising experience, starting on penguins, scows, and Solings, and graduating to big boats and sport boats. His sailing resume boasts thousands of course races and thousands of offshore miles in the Chicago-Mackinac, Queen’s Cup, Hook, and Trans-Superior races, winning many. He and his family race and cruise together as often as possible.

Welcome to the Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club Minimize

The Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club (NNYC) has been in existence since 1864, making it one of the oldest Yacht Clubs in the country.  During the years since our founding the NNYC has been committed to promoting sailing for individuals of all ages by sponsoring club racing and cruising for many types of boats, participation in Lake Winnebago events, helping to support the Fox Valley Sailing School, and taking part in many community events. When the NNYC was formed it set out to accomplish three goals which are still the cornerstone of our existence:

  1. To promote pleasure sailing and racing on Lake Winnebago.
  2. To establish a standard code of rules and signals for the Lake.
  3. To discourage extravagant expenditure in yachting.
